Many states and territories continued with anti- and pro-slavery hostilities. Violent events, such as the one known as Bleeding Kansas, continued as more and more abolitionists wanted the end of slavery.<br \/>\nJohn Greenleaf Whittier composed a poem, The Kansas Emigrants, which invited those from the Northto settle in Kansas.<\/p>\n<pre> Its last stanza reads\r\n We'll tread the prairie as of old\r\n Our fathers sailed the sea\r\n And make the West, as they the East,\r\n The homestead of the free!<\/pre>\n<p>In Octob<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.magenta-englishclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/John_Brown_1846-50-233x300.png\" alt=\"John_Brown_1846-50\" width=\"121\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.magenta-englishclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/John_Brown_1846-50-233x300.png 233w, https:\/\/www.magenta-englishclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/John_Brown_1846-50-795x1024.png 795w, https:\/\/www.magenta-englishclub.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/John_Brown_1846-50.png 1145w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 121px) 100vw, 121px\" \/>er 1859 the radical John Brown attempted an armed slave revolt in Harper\u2019s Ferry, West Virginia.<br \/>\nIt failed, and John Brown was tried for treason and executed in December 1859<br \/>\nThe song John Brown\u2019s Body was composed two years later and became a very popular marching song during the American civil war.
